The stakes

Why reviews decide hotel revenue

The digital front door to every hotel is its review profile. Here's what's at stake.

30 bookings

lost per unaddressed 1-star review

OTA algorithms weight recency, so one bad review can suppress your listing for a full quarter.

9.0+

Below 9.0, you lose loyalty-tier promotion and premium placement.

Extortion

We escalate ToS-violating extortive reviews through documented removal pipelines.

How buyers decide

When a guest decides to book a hotel

Guests book with the reviews open in the next tab. The crisis cards above describe the mechanism: OTA algorithms weight recency, so one unaddressed one-star can suppress a listing for a full quarter, and the property never sees the bookings it lost.

  1. 01

    The rating filter

On Booking.com, Expedia and TripAdvisor, guests filter by score before they read anything. A property that slips below the filter line disappears from the search entirely, and a run of one-stars is what moves it.

  2. 02

    The deal-breaker scan

Guests read for specific fears: bed bugs, mould, theft, an unsafe street. A review that mentions one of those, true or not, is the review they remember, and it follows the property for the season.

  3. 03

    The extortion review

The crisis card above calls extortion rampant in hospitality reviews. A guest who demanded a refund or an upgrade in exchange for changing a review has violated every platform's rules, and the message where they made the demand is the evidence.

How we calculate this
  • Star-rating drag on click-through tapers and caps at 18%. Negative sentiment is scored as a share of your total review volume and caps at 20%. Both compound, then apply only to the ~55% of buyers who read reviews and act on them.
  • No correctly typed margin is available for this industry, so the model shows revenue only.
  • Benchmarks for hotels & lodging come from the published sources listed below.
  • Estimates only. Every market is different.

Sources

  • CoStar / STR, U.S. hotel performance, full-year 2024 (2025). Average daily rate of $158.67, RevPAR of $99.94, and 63.0% occupancy. Limitation: roughly 86,000 properties self-report to STR, and a national average hides wide variance by chain scale and market. STR publishes no revenue-per-booking figure.
  • The Knot, 2025 Real Weddings Study. Average total wedding cost of $33,000 for couples married in 2024 and about $284 per guest. Limitation: a self-selected online survey of roughly 17,000 couples on one platform, and the figure is total wedding spend rather than a venue-only line item.
  • Reputation Medics editorial note, Missing data note for venues, golf, charters, and casinos (2026). No publisher prints an average revenue per booking for hotels, a venue-only rental average, a current per-round revenue figure for golf courses, a national charter-boat price, or a casino revenue-per-visit figure. The National Golf Foundation's current per-round economics sit in a members-only report, and the American Gaming Association publishes total gaming revenue without a per-visit denominator. Those job types are left out rather than derived.
  • Reputation Medics editorial note, Missing margin data note for fee-for-service practices (2026). No association publishes a gross or operating margin for dental practices, med spas, clinics, senior living, law firms, advisory firms, brokerages, or hotels. The ADA publishes dentist net income, not a margin; AmSpa publishes revenue per med spa, not a margin; AICPA's margin figure sits behind its paid MAP survey. The fee or room rate on this page is treated as revenue, not profit. Read the figures as lost billings, not lost take-home.
  • BrightLocal, 2024 Local Consumer Review Survey. Star rating and review sentiment vs. click-through from search and maps. Used for the click-through drag curve.
  • Harvard Business School · Michael Luca, Reviews, Reputation, and Revenue. Peer-reviewed link between review sentiment and revenue. Used for the sentiment drag curve.

What the number above means

Occupancy and rate math for a hotel

The crisis card above puts the cost of one unaddressed one-star at 30 lost bookings. A visible false review does not lose one night. It lowers the rate the market will pay for every night until it is gone.

  • Group, wedding and conference contracts are decided by committees that read everything, and one accusation of a ruined event can lose a full weekend of rooms.
  • Reviews from people who never stayed, who were removed for cause, or who are reviewing a different property with a similar name are common and reportable.
  • Enter your average booking value into the calculator above, or the average event contract if events are your business.

Buyer psychology

What earns buyer trust in hotels & lodging

When choosing a hotel, consumers weigh authentic, high-volume reviews as the deciding signal between you and a competitor a single click away.

Recency wins

Buyers weigh reviews from the last 90 days most heavily. A stale 5-star profile still loses to a competitor with fresh momentum in hotels & lodging.

Volume signals safety

Prospects use raw review count as a proxy for legitimacy. Below 25 reviews, most local buyers filter your listing out entirely.

Response builds trust

How you respond to a 1-star review says more than the review itself. Silence reads as guilt, measured accountability reads as leadership.

One bad review, filtered forever

A single unaddressed 1-star can suppress hotels & lodging local pack rankings and cut click-through by 30% or more.

Compliance-first

ToS-aligned, defensible growth for hotels & lodging

Every workflow, from response to removal filing, is built to keep your Hotels & Lodging business on the right side of platform policy and consumer-protection law. We never post fake reviews, incentivize ratings, or violate directory terms.

The rules that apply to you

What the platforms and regulators actually say about hotels & lodging

Every statement below is sourced. Read them before you decide how to handle a review.

5-9% per star

A one-star rating change moves revenue by a measurable amount

Michael Luca's Harvard Business School study of independent restaurants found a one-star increase in Yelp rating associated with a 5 to 9 percent increase in revenue. The finding is restaurant-specific, and it is the closest peer-reviewed measure of what a rating is worth to a hotel.

Source: Harvard Business School · Michael Luca, 2016

Off topic

Complaints about things you do not control are reportable

Reviews about a third-party delivery driver, a ticketing site, the weather or another venue with a similar name are off topic under Google's published policy, and that is the ground the filing uses.

Source: Google Maps Help

16 CFR Part 465

Buying reviews to bury a bad one is a federal violation, not a shortcut

Since October 21, 2024 the FTC rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews, insider reviews presented as customer reviews, and paying for positive or negative reviews, with civil penalties available per violation. For a hotel that leaves two lawful moves: earn real reviews, and report the ones that break platform policy.

Source: U.S. Federal Trade Commission, 2024

Policy grounds only

Google removes reviews that break a policy, not reviews you dislike

Google's own help documentation says any review can be reported but only content that violates its policies is eligible for removal. That is why a case starts by matching the wording to a named policy: fake engagement, off topic, impersonation, harassment, personal information or conflict of interest.

Timeline

What happens after a hotel opens a removal case

Nothing here is a promise of removal, because that decision belongs to the platform. Most Google removals take 7–21 days; Yelp and other platforms typically take 60–90 days. Complex cases use a Custom Care Plan with their own timeline.

  1. Day 0 · Free scan and eligibility read

We pull the live review or page from Google and TripAdvisor and Booking.com, quote it verbatim, and say which policy it breaks. If nothing breaks a rule we say so and take no fee.

  2. Days 1-3 · Filing with the reservation record

Where no booking, ticket or check exists for the reviewer, that goes in first. Where the complaint is about something the venue does not control, the off-topic ground carries the report.

  3. Platform moderation

Google evaluates reports against its prohibited and restricted content policy; most Google removals take 7–21 days. Yelp and other platforms typically take 60–90 days. The platform decides the timing.

  4. Days 10-21 · Appeal where the first report is declined

A declined report is not the end. Google provides an appeal route for reviews it decides to keep, and a second filing that cites a different policy ground and better evidence is often what moves it.

  5. Day 30 (Google) / Day 90 (Yelp & other platforms): refund deadline

Upfront fees are refunded after our review if a Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days. No claim or form is required. Refunds are issued within 5 business days of the deadline.

Before you start

What a hotel needs before starting a removal

The start form takes a few minutes if you have these four things in front of you. Nothing else is required to open the case.

  1. The exact link to the review or page

On Google, open the review, use the three-dot menu and choose Share to copy its direct link. On Yelp, use the share icon under the review. For a harmful page, paste the full URL from the address bar.

  2. Your business name exactly as it appears on the profile

Use the property name as it appears on the listing that carries the review. Properties with separate listings for the restaurant, spa or venue need the case opened on the correct one.

  3. Why the item breaks the platform's rules

One or two sentences is enough. Typical grounds for a hotel: the reviewer never stayed, the review threatens or offers to change the rating in exchange for something, it is about a different property, or it names a staff member with accusations it does not support.

  4. Your preferred payment option

Pay upfront: $397 for Google, $697 for Yelp, or $497 for another site or harmful link. Pay upon removal: save a card, pay $0 today, and pay $50 more per item only once each removal is documented. No refund term applies because nothing is charged before removal. Pay upfront. If the specific Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days of payment, we refund the removal fee to your original payment method. No claim or form needed. We review and issue it within 5 business days.

Hotels & Lodging review removal FAQs

A guest threatened a bad review unless we refunded them, then posted it. Can it come down?+

Reviews used as leverage violate conflict-of-interest rules on Google, Yelp and the major travel platforms. Keep the message where the threat was made. We quote it in the report, and documented extortion is one of the clearer removal cases we file.

Someone who never stayed left a one-star. What do you need from us?+

Confirmation that no reservation or folio exists under the reviewer's name, plus anything in the review that could not apply to your property. We file under the genuine-experience policy without disclosing any real guest's information.

Do you remove reviews on Booking.com, Expedia or TripAdvisor?+

Self-serve removal covers Google at $397, Yelp at $697 and harmful links at $497. Booking and travel platforms each run their own dispute process, and we map the right one for your case in a consultation rather than charging for a filing that has no route.

How long does hotels & lodging review removal typically take?+

Most Google removals: 7–21 days. Yelp and other platforms: typically 60–90 days. The platform decides the timing. Complex cases involving defamation, legal escalation, coordinated attacks, or many items across platforms are quoted individually through the Custom Care Plan, with their own timeline.

Do you remove legitimate negative reviews?+

No. We only pursue reviews that violate a platform's Terms of Service: fake, off-topic, defamatory, extortive, or conflict-of-interest. Legitimate complaints are addressed via a response strategy, not deletion.

Is this compliant with FTC and platform policy?+

Yes. Every workflow (outreach, invitations, responses, removal appeals) is aligned with the FTC Endorsement Guides and each platform's ToS. We keep audit-ready logs of every action.

What does hotels & lodging review removal cost?+

Pay upfront: $397 Google, $697 Yelp, or $497 other sites and harmful links.

What if a removal request is denied?+

We escalate through documented appeal channels. Upfront fees are refunded after our review if a Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days. Pay upon removal: save a card, pay $0 today, and pay $50 more per item only once each removal is documented. No refund term applies because nothing is charged before removal.

Sources for Hotels & Lodging+

Every statistic cited inline on this page is drawn from the following industry sources. Citations remain inline alongside each figure so context stays with the claim.

  1. Peer-reviewed study of independent restaurants finding a one-star rating increase associated with a 5 to 9 percent revenue increase. Restaurant-specific, cited only where the business model is comparable.

  2. The policy list a removal report has to cite: fake engagement, off-topic content, impersonation, harassment, personal information and conflicts of interest.

  3. Federal rule effective October 21, 2024. Bans fake or AI-generated reviews, reviews by insiders presented as customers, and buying positive or negative reviews. This is why removal has to be argued on policy grounds instead of countered with bought reviews.

  4. Google's own documentation of the report route: any review can be reported, only reviews that break a content policy are eligible for removal, and the decision is Google's.

  5. How do I report a review?Yelp for Business Support Center

Yelp states that reported content is evaluated by its moderators and that the evaluation may take several days, with an email sent when it is done.
